first shot ❀ video ❀ pallet town

[The PokéGear turns on to show Mami, hesitating with the controls until she realizes she's succeeded, and smiles.]

Hello, my name is Mami Tomoe. I know it's rather early for this, but since some people might not know what Pallet Town has to offer, my friend and I thought we might give you a peek.

[And she shifts the view to... a long patch of dirt, decent sized holes dug in a line along its length. Apparently - despite the chill in the air - someone decided to spend the snow-free weekend gardening.]

Along with a lovely fish market and cozy inn, Pallet offers a berry orchard, and for a small fee visitors can pluck their pick. It will be a few months yet before they bloom, but we're just now planting some of the trees you'll be able to see, this coming spring.

Kaname-san?

[The gear turns to show Madoka, who is smiling too. She'd be so nervous to do this alone, but it's fun to do this with a friend!]

And did you know that Pallet Town is said to be the Friendliest Town in Kanto? [She frowns a bit.] The ferry ride was kind of expensive, but [...back to her cheerful face.] Everything there was great, and you can work at the inn to earn money here. So it's the same what you do in any other city, I think that's what they said. Maybe local restaurants are hiring people too...

[...Oh wait, did she forget to say something important here? Oh!]

My name is Madoka Kaname, you can just call me Madoka! Nice to meet you all!

[There's an off-screen giggle.]

Very good, Kaname-san. And she's absolutely right! If you come to Kanto from Johto, you'll be passing through this town, which makes the attractions all the more welcome.

And as for the trees... Now wait just a moment-

[Mami turned the gear again, focusing in on some half-grown trees waiting on a cart to be moved to the dirt. But a Rattata has jumped onto the cart as well, and is chewing on one of the tiny tree trunks!]

[Madoka laughs sheepishly at Mami's compliment. This is going better than she expected this to go for her own part.]

Maybe they'll teach everyone to do something from those berries. We're really not sure right now, but they know a lot about different ber--.

[Sorry, she kind of stops in the middle of the last word because there's the Rattata. There's an off-screen challenging sound from an Eevee.]

Ehh, Eevee. It's okay. We'll --

[Madoka moves closer to the rat. Too close, in its opinion as it tries to bite the girl, who then takes a step backward. Right, not like that. Definitely not like that.]

I wouldn't get too close. That one doesn't look interested in getting along.

[-and listen to that, Mami's dropped her courteous tone for a far more serious, flat one. There's some rustling, and then a hand reaches up to release a Petilil from a Pokéball.

And she does not look happy about being out in the cold.]

I'm sorry, Sara. It'll just be a minute.

Absorb, please.

[There's a reluctant trill, but the Petilil's move does allow them to attack the Rattata without chancing harm to the trees. And, indeed, the wild Pokémon staggers a moment from the attack before jumping off the cart, trying to make a move towards the girls.]

Ehhehhehehe.... [Madoka really should learn that not all of them were friendly... Mami can see her surprised face when the Petilil comes out of its ball.

And then after Absorb, and the Rattata leaving the cart, everyone can hear her clapping her hands together.]

That was great, Mami-san, Sara! --Ehhh, it's coming here?! [Why? Fail Trainer Madoka doesn't know what to do! Good thing her Eevee jumps between the girls and the Rattata.]

You want to go for it too? [Yep, Eevee looks and sounds very determined to fight.] Ummm... T-Tackle, I guess? Please? [Please be careful, okay? Madoka could add that too, but the Eevee is tackling that rat already... And it does it a few times instead of just one until the Rattata flees.]

It looks like Pokémon really do jump for a fight.

[Sara gives a weak sort of protesting noise, but there's no denying that's a tough little Eevee.]

Perfect! That was a lovely job. And I mean you too, Sara. [There's a shifting view as Mami sets the gear on the ground, giving a tilted view of the second bundled up girl picking up her shivering Petilil.] If we've promised to look after this orchard, we can't allow any wild beasts to harass it, can we?

[Really, how does Madoka always get those fierce protectors...?] You were all great! [But she wouldn't call herself even good, much less perfect, at this thing right now. Eevee looks happy and jumps to Madoka's shoulder.] Of course we can't! The wild Pokémon seem to be really interested in this place. Maybe it's just this time of the year...

Perhaps. But from what I've heard, there's far more where that came from, if we plan to leave town on foot.

[Not that Mami sounds particularly worried. And why should she, with such Pokémon to look after them? And her own is tugging on her coat, drawing her attention back to her gear.]

Oh- [The view of the girls gets much closer, as the device is picked up.] I'm sorry, everyone. I shouldn't have left this on so long.

That's true. Maybe they won't do anything if we walk on roads instead of bushes. ...If that's even possible.

[Madoka sounds a little worried. She'll take time to get used to it.

Oh, it's still on? Sheepish smile from the pink haired girl.]
Yeah, sorry about that ...But since it's still on! [Now she looks excited and peeks even closer to the screen.] Can you tell me about all the different cat Pokémon? I'm trying to decide which one to get first!

[OOC: Too bright colors?! Let us know! Order in action tagging is YOU -> Mami -> Madoka. Also, Madoka's replies will come from [personal profile] herwish as always, but don't friend that account! :3]

I hate to sound cynical, but it's impossible to befriend every single one of your Pokémon, just like it's impossible for them to all become friends with each other.

Sometimes, you'll end up with a Pokémon that has a nasty attitude outside of battles. That's important to keep in mind because it means you'll have to work around that.

[He shakes his head.]

Take it from someone with three years of experience; Pokémon are as diverse as people, and some are just as cruel.

Maybe for wild Pokémon that works, but for a Pokémon you raise from an egg, it's not that simple. You can't really predict their personalities as an egg, either.

[Still, she's got a point.]

I think it's important to treat any Pokémon of yours with respect if you can, but it's also important to stay assertive. That's all.

Yeah. And I mean, I definitely see the perks of having a team of Pokémon you actually get along with. If you can befriend them, more power to you. It definitely makes things easier than if your Pokémon resents you or, even worse, wants to eat you like Terror does.

[But that Aerodactyl's something else.]

But anyway, if you've got more questions about training, I don't mind filling you in. Like I said, I've got years of experience, and I could always send my guide your way for good measure.

[But not everyone wants to read a wall of text, so.]

Well, you're in Kanto, so if you plan on taking the gym challenge, you're gonna want to grab some types effective against rock. Your starter's a decent start, but if you can, I'd seriously recommend getting a water type egg from the Breeding Center; they give freebies to newbies.

[Assuming she hasn't claimed hers already.]

Also, you should try catching a variety of types. And don't be afraid of letting them train on their own or make their own decisions in battles; giving orders is a good way to start, but since not every trainer does, there might be cases where you and your Pokémon need to think on the fly.

[With that said, he'll go ahead and attach links to the Breeding Center and his Training Guide.]

Raising them from birth does give you a better chance of raising them 'right.' On the other hand, wild Pokémon do have survival experience that a hand-raised Pokémon might lack. My closest Pokémon was caught wild and the one that wants to kill me came from an egg... but I've also caught Pokémon with stoic and violent streaks and raised overly affectionate metal bugs.

[Heh.]

You could argue nature vs nurture all you want, but every Pokémon's gonna be different regardless of where they come from. Grabbing them from eggs just gives you the added advantage of shaping them while they grow. That, and they won't have to leave their homes behind.

[Well, that was more longwinded than he expected, but since she asked about his guide...]

And yeah, I wrote it all up on my own.

Hey, you've got plenty of time to research, so knock yourself out. Once you hit Viridian City, you might even be able to dig up some extra details from their library.

[And seeing how they've gone this long without a proper intro...]

Name's Riku, by the way.

Sometimes you have a little too much time on your hands. Especially if you're like me and have all the badges already.

[Now, if the Elite Four took challenges, he'd have something to do.]

And same here, Mami. And good luck traveling; I know it's pretty rough at first.

Normally it'd grant you entrance into the Pokémon League, but right now they aren't accepting challengers. Kind of a pain, if you ask me.

[Especially when he'd love to face some more tough trainers.]

Travel, train... and run my business. Got a Training Center set up in Celadon City, so when I'm not running around, I've still got my hands full. Especially since the TC's where I stash most of my Pokémon in the first place.

[It means he doesn't have to take up PC space, which is a nice little perk.]
